Ways of dealing with insects

We are most exposed to getting stung in the summer months, especially during our vacations, when we spend more time than usual outdoors. Insects will often sit on ice cream as well as pieces of fruit. They will also frequently fly into open beverage bottles and as well as be drawn to blossoming flowers and plants. These kinds of situations are, no doubt, a potential source of danger.

Despite the fact that it is always a painful experience, in the long term, the effects of getting stung are perfectly harmless to most people. They do however pose a serious danger to anyone allergic to the venom of hymenoptera insects. That being the case, it is worth knowing how to minimize the chances of getting stung.
Here are a few tips:

  1. Stay away from ripe fruit that has fallen to the ground (off of trees and bushes) as well as blossoming plants (avoid places like gardens, orchards and lawns – also steer clear of flow-beds, blossoming trees as well as bushes’, clover fields and compost).
  2. If you happen to be in one of the above mentioned high-risk areas make sure to have on clothing that leaves as little of your body exposed as possible. It is recommended that people who suffer from an allergy to the venom of hymenoptera insects wear long sleeve tops and tightly fitting pants as well as a hat, gloves and shoes that leave as little of their legs/feet bare as possible.
  3. Avoid wearing vibrant colors and lightweight, loose-fitting garments in which it is easy for insets to get caught-up in – also remember to stay away from clothing which is made from materials containing ornamental patterns.
  4. Don’t use any intensely scented cosmetics before leaving the house to go out (such as perfume, deodorants, hairspray, shampoo or aftershave). These cosmetics draw the attention of (and irritate) potentially dangers insects.
  5. Install insect screens on your windows.
  6. Avoid eating and drinking outdoors (especially during periods when the insects are most active. And if you do choose to drink outside, stay away from canned beverages – insects can easily slip into an open can without us noticing.
  7. Remember to never leave open cans, bottles or cartons containing beverages standing around. If you drink something outside, you should always try to make sure that no insect made it’s way into the beverage container.
  8. Make sure to cover-up any food that you are not currently eating (that goes not only for sweats but also vegetables, meat, soups, bread etc.
  9. Immediately change out of any clothes stained with a sweet beverage, piece of fruit, chocolate, honey, jam, ice cream etc.
  10. Make sure to tightly close the lid on the trashcan and waste bin. Also, whenever possible, remember to collect compost.
  11. When deciding to actively spend time outdoors remember to keep in mind that sweet attracts hymenoptera insects (use repellent).
  12. Try not to rattle tree or bush branches (i.e. while riding a bike). These are the kinds of places where bee hives are often found.
  13. Don’t walk around barefoot. Also avoid lying down on the grass and/or ground.
  14. When traveling by car, keep the windows closed.
  15. Steer clear of places where animals are fed – the leftover food (crumbs etc.) attracts bees and wasps.
