What is an allergy to venom?

An allergy, or allergic reaction is your body’s reaction to a given allergen – in this case to the venom of hymenoptera insects.

Among the species of hymenoptera insects most commonly found in Europe are:

An allergy to hymenoptera insect venom is most frequently diagnosed among children as well as those people who have been stung by this type of insect on numerous occasions.
Hymenoptera insect venom is a so-called “immediate” allergen. This means that the allergic reaction it causes occurs within a few minutes of being stung.
In addition, the symptoms that it causes can be hazardous to the health to the extent of being life threatening.
